Children receiving nutritious food
Santvana Poshan

How it began

A concern noticed at a health camp

Santvana Poshan is a nutrition support initiative designed to provide simple, wholesome food to children attending Santvana Sahara learning and study centres. It began after observations from a health camp and feedback from visitors highlighted that several children appeared undernourished, tired, or lacking sufficient food during the day.

The concern was discussed with teachers and volunteers, and after considering the children's needs and local context, the team decided to introduce a simple and affordable supplementary nutrition programme. With support from sponsors and well-wishers, Santvana Poshan was launched in November 2023.

What we provide

Nutritious food, three times a week

Nutritious food is distributed every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday to children attending Santvana Sahara centres, along with children from neighbouring communities. The menu is adapted according to the season, availability, and the needs of the children.

Winter menu

  • Roasted chickpeas
  • Jaggery
  • Bananas

Summer menu

  • Sweet puffed rice
  • Roasted chickpeas
  • Bananas

Why it matters

Small changes, noticed by teachers

For some children, attending tuition without having eaten adequately at home makes it difficult to concentrate and participate. Teachers and volunteers have observed several positive changes among participating children:

  • Greater energy and alertness during classes
  • Improved regularity and participation
  • Better concentration during learning activities
  • Fewer children attending classes feeling hungry
  • Greater enthusiasm for school and tuition
  • Improved overall wellbeing, as reported by teachers and parents

A community-supported initiative

Sustained by sponsors and well-wishers

Santvana Poshan is sustained through the generosity of sponsors, supporters and individuals who believe that good nutrition is an important foundation for children's education and development. The programme has benefited greatly from the support of Itty's Nutrition Club and other contributors who have helped make regular food distribution possible.

The continuing need

Support has recently declined

In recent months, financial support for the programme has declined, requiring a reduction in the quantity of food provided each week — while the need among the children continues. With continued support, Santvana Poshan can reach more children, provide more consistent nutritional support, and strengthen its contribution to their health, learning and future opportunities.
